In Blog 90 I talked about building a team for success. In this blog I wanted to talk about how change is constant in retail.
Business was really good so I was able to hire a few more people. I interviewed a guy name Bill. Seemed like a really good guy and would be a great addition to the team. Little did I know this guy would be in my life for a long time including today. He was a great salesperson and volunteered to take care of the work bench area keeping all our supplies in stock.
Changes
Eileen decided her passion was selling the Salon type shoes so she transferred over to “Women’s Shoes” with Kaaren. Funny thing was she still came over to “our side” to sell Guess booties because she knew we’d have them in stock.
My First Asst. Derek decided to leave Nordstrom so I needed to replace him. He was such a great employee I knew it would be tough to do. We had gone through so much together building the team up and I genuinely liked him. Jean Claude suggested I talk to someone in Clothing named Candice.

I talked to her that week and immediately liked her. It was a tough choice as my 2nd asst was expecting the position. I felt she had better Manager qualities so gave her a chance. She turned out to be a great choice.
Change is constant in retail and you need to embrace itl. It is so important, it is one of our “10 Core values” at Zappos. Back then though, it wasn’t defined that way, I just knew it was a constant of retail you had to embrace. Its how you move forward and always improve your situation that matters

Man we’re we young back then! Bill and Eileen and Aaron and I all worked together. The fun we had pushing each other to do better. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Mike. I was giving birth to my second child when Mike called me and offered me the job on his management team. Never forget that!
You were amazing to have on the team and we had so much fun that year.
